One of the oldest feuds that ended happily was the friction between Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi. They could not see eye to eye when the royalty for singers became a hotly contested issue in the industry. Lata was all for royalty coming to the singers and Rafi was least bothered. He pleaded that he was happy with the payment he received from the producers for the songs he rendered for their films and he wanted no more than that. Lata, offended by her sought after colleague’s unwillingness to support her stand, stopped singing duets with Rafi much to the discomfort and chagrin of music directors. Finally Jaikishan of the Shankar Jaikishan duo brought about the rapprochement, it is said. There were no tabloids then to add spice to the facts and splash the story of reconciliation for mass consumption and there was no question of reading a publicity motive into the whole episode.
