Utsav, 1984 Based on the renowned Sanskrit play Mrichakatika, this story about an encounter between a courtesan (Rekha) and a poor Brahmin lad (Shekhar Suman) failed at the box-office despite its mature love scenes and suggestive moments which ought to have found its share of viewers. The only obvious reason is that it was located in the distant past. Had that not been the case, it would have been a major success. But then, the director of such a film wouldn’t have been Girish Karnad either.
