Smita whose real name was Vijayalakshmi found out for herself that makeup , costumes and the willing transformation an actress goes through as the character she is assigned to play all combine to give a performer an identity that has no resemblance to her real self. She confessed she was most taken aback when her part in Vandichakram earned great popularity and before she knew it she was being referred to as Silk Smita and she was plastered with a screen image as a sex symbol without her really asking for it. It was good for her and she felt “nice about the recognition” she was getting.
