Silk Smita’s life is truly representative of the price that the overambitious in the film world have to pay when their expectations are not met. Smita was doing well as a supporting actress and there was ample appreciation for the rendering of good roles that came to her from quality conscious and dedicated directors. She had the good fortune to work with Balu Mahendra very early in her career and it made her journey to success easy. She made her name with the prolific Tamil writer and director Vinu Chakravarthy’s movie Vandichakram in which her character’s name was Silk. In 1995 when I met her she had made an indelible mark in Spadikam sharing screen space with the formidable Mohanlal. Director Bhadran had probably conceived the role with her in mind and had aesthetically exploited the oomph she exuded.
