Smita had no problem if her critics dismissed her as a mere sex symbol. She was happy that there were directors in the industry who respected her for the work she was capable of doing. She turned to production to expand her horizon and perhaps to create serious roles for herself so that she could find a niche for her talent among the dramatic actresses in the industry. Her idol was Savithri who was in many ways the Meena Kumari of Tamil Cinema. When her production flopped and she found herself in debt the realization dawned on her that in the show business world nobody is a friend when you are down and out. Inevitably she slipped into acute depression and she was gone before anybody in her family could guess what was going on in her mind.
